“…Colorful ceramics for modern tastes…”

May 8, 2025

No wonder they got it

The National Tile Contractors Association (NTCA) is perhaps the most influential association in the tile industry. Their focus is on installers, the professionals we entrust with our reputation once our tile has left the studio. NTCA has been around for nearly 80 years. The organization represents every step in the process of turning abstract design ideas sketched on paper into tangible displays of color and texture in people’s homes and businesses. In addition to installation contractors, NTCA counts manufacturers, distributors and consultants among their membership.

Skilled installers play such a critical role in our industry. We completely rely on them to ensure our customers are just as happy with our tile after it’s attached to the wall as they were when they chose it. NTCA’s workshops, regional training events and webinars provide hands on opportunities for installing contractors to improve their craft, helping us sleep much better at night.

NTCA’s work supports every aspect of the tile industry. They actively participate on ANSI and ASTM committees, directly influencing industry standards that benefit us all. Their online training and learning portal, NTCA University, provides unparalleled educational content to raise awareness of those standards and expand product knowledge at all levels.

The Certified Tile Installer program NTCA developed with the Ceramic Tile Education Foundation and the Tile Council of North America sets a high bar, establishing a culture of excellence from which every tile manufacturer, distributor, show room, designer, and customer reaps benefits.

With its deep industry knowledge, NTCA has become the leading authority on the technical aspects of the entire tile manufacturing, distribution and installation industry.

Who knew?

To be honest, we didn’t realize any of that back in 2021 when Lesley Goddin, who since 2006 has been editor of NTCA’s magazine, TileLetter, called about doing a profile on Clayhaus. With her obvious grasp of our industry’s inner workings, Lesley asked insightful questions to elicit thoughtful, authentic responses. The result, Portland tile maker crafts colorful ceramics for modern tastes, captures the true essence of Clayhaus, something we ourselves often have difficulty putting into words. When the article was published in October 2021, we were too distracted by the impacts COVID was having on our business to truly appreciate it.

Looking back, and now that we better understand what NTCA represents for our industry, we’re more proud of it than ever.
